Dear everyone,

Week 5 team at Becoming a Webehad 2007 would like to congratulate your survival! This indicates that you will make it to the graduation ceremony! If you would like to know more about what type of hands will guide you through this week, you may go directly here:

http://baw07.pbwiki.com/moderators

Look for us: Cristina Costa, Hala Fawzi as moderators and our co-moderators; Elisabeth Fernandes , Fernanda Rodrigues and Ramona Dietrich . Our Queen of threads for this week, who has voluntarily joined us, will be Sasha Sirk . Thank you Sasha! Great to have you with us! What do we have for you during this week? This week we will have one special synchronous (real time) event that will be held at Alado http://www.alado.net/webheads, presented by Dr. Isabel Perez, in Spain, who will talk to us about different resources for creating on- and offline custom-made materials for our students. You may check out here further here:

http://baw07.pbwiki.com/Chat_sessions#Week5 Please add your name in the YG Database to tell us that you are attending this session.

As we consider this week is a more practical one, there is only one suggested reading with another optional one. Both reading are very related to our topic, so they will add to your experience more than you can imagine! The discussion of these reading will be in our forum: http://www.miumu.com/phpbb/baw07.html

We will be exploring together a collection of software for creating interactive exercises, online surveys, quizzes, and online sheets. To know what you are supposed to do, go to our week 5 page on the wiki: http://baw07.pbwiki.com/week5

You may choose the most appropriate type of exercise or quiz you could use with your students. Please share with the group the best ways of implementing these tools into our classrooms.

A collection of useful online resources for your classes will be provided later , so as to give you the chance to explore the tools first!

To guarantee that you could have many useful resources that will be online for you after the session ends, all links to resources will be added to: http://baw07participants.pbwiki.com/toolsexplored

This week is slightly different in that; we offer (((((((((Hugs )))))))))) for those of you who managed to:

1-Finish readings and post reflections to the Forum.

2-Create an online exercise, a quiz, a survey, an online sheet, etc.

2.Suggest a useful online resource to use with students.

3.Help a webhead in this week with any of the activities.

Sorry, we have no kudos (kisses), because we do not want you to bother with any lipstick marks left on your cheeks ;-). It feels good when you become way ahead! So, try to start working from now!!Week 5 is calling you!

We hope this will be a rich, fruitful and enjoyable week!

Week 5 Team!

Hi, Moira, Chrissan and Mabel!

"Thank you" and "congrats" on your fabulous work this week. It was very "smooth sailing", but Daf and I know well at what expense that happens. Everything went very well, with lots of great presentations and new tools explored.

A special "congrats" to Mabel, because, as Moira reminded us this afternoon in the EVO Skypecast, it was her first co-moderation job, and she did very well. I wasn't able to follow the week as I'd wished, but the message flow and the subject lines were enough to show the commitment and enthusiasm.

"Thank you" also to the participants for being so involved. It's overwhelming, but it pays, you'll see. Luckily I was able to make the presentations and really enjoyed them.

"Thank you" to all guest speakers for being here for us for the first time - Jane Bozarth and Geoff Kaye - and once again - Jonathan Finkelstein and Andy Pincon.

Week 5 is also in 5 great hands - what a coincidence! - and we have a great guest speaker with an eye-opening presentation. Don't miss Isabel's presentation on Thursday. On behalf of Daf and myself, "thank you" again on a job well done. And "break a leg" to the next week's mods and co-mods: Hala and Cristina,Fernanda, Ramona and Elisabeth.

Dear Moira, Chrissan and Mabel,

What a fantastic job you have done! Congratulations on your successful voyage!

Moira has done wonderful planning for all the activities for week 4, which has led to a fun, exciting voyage of learning. Chrissan and Mabel have also helped to make everything go smoothly. Thank you all ! I wish I had had the time to participate in all of your activities during Week 4. Due to the time zone differences and my busy work schedule, I was able to attend only one of the live sessions given by guest speakers. I hope I will have the chance to try out all of the voice tools when I have more time. Thank you again! :-)))

Hello Moira and team :)

Congratulations on the wonderful work you have done during this week. I can listen to different speakers, if not in a live event but after. i was at some of the conferences, tried new tools, learnt a lot of new things I didn't know they existed before. Best of all, you are so enthusiastic all the time, that you motivated me to read and use tools, even though I'm shy and don't like to use webcams or mics :) it was hard work but we did it!!!! Thanks a lot for everything!!!

Hi everyone,

Week 4 is coming to an end. For me, it's been a very busy (almost hectic) butvery exciting week. Virtual classrooms and voice tools are probably the area where most of us have less experience, and there's also more demand of technological capabilities on ourside. At the same time, it's the closest you can get to replicating the atmosphere of a face to face class (that is, if you add, in Moira's words, the human touch). So I think it's worth the effort and hiccups!!

I'd also like to thank the Guest Speakers for their inspiring presentations and not forgetting that we are not tech savvy people, just teachers wanting to develop professionally to improve our teaching and our students' learning This session's participants are so enthusiastic and adventurous ! It's a real pleasure to learn with you! I would love to go interacting and exploring webtools with you all in the next few weeks and months (my skype and yahoocontact list are really crowded now):)

True, I came on board kind of last minute but I could cope with my share of the work thanks to hard working, humorous Moira and Chrissan, so it was a bit ofwork but I had so much fun and learnt so much!!!

A final thank you note to coordinators Daf (I would have never been able to produce pages in the wiki if I hadn't counted on your samples and your help editing ), Teresa for wonderful tutorials and warm presence in the conference rooms and moderators Cora, Cris, Hala and Dennis Denos and all comoderators forbehind (and on) the scenes warmth and support.

Looking forward to week 5!

Thank you BaWers and friends for taking part in all the week 4 activities! We all learn so much, my new favourites are definitely Chinswing and Gabjam! It has been a pleasure working with you all and Moira's exceptional planning abilities together with comodding partner Mabel made it all possible. So let's welcome Hala and Cora and take a plunge into week 5!!

Hi Nelba!

I liked your idea, to place a clock on my blog. I followed the directions given by Dafne (all the way from Spain!)

http://www.clocklink.com/

I clicked on the link, then clicked on: Want a clock for your blog? I chose the clock and clicked on HTML code.

In the first attempt, the clock did not show so I went and copied the optional second code to embed and pasted it. Once in my blog, when I hit the button"publish" a dialog saying that the code was not closed showed up.

All I did was to add to the end of the string and it worked! I was not asked for a credit card number or anything of the sort.

Please send me the link to your blog to visit. Thanks for working so hard and for being an example for me to follow.

Hi Sarah,

I apologise but I have just heard your message you left on the voice board in our BaW07 blog.

You can always post message to any motime blog as an unlogged in user (so without an account) but you must remember to type in your name at the end of your message. Just click on 'Comment' and start typing :-) If you want to register for an account, you use your own email address and your own username and you choose your own password.

If you've heard nothing from Motime, try to open another account. Normally their reply is automatic when setting up an account.

Hala's comment about her students' reaction to her blog has inspired me. I have three class blogs kept by students I'm likely to meet again as from next month, when the school year starts again in Argentina. Right now I'm working on enhancing the templates and adding widgets...

Wouldn't it be great if a few of you might drop by and leave a comment on those entries from 2006 who have not received any comments yet? That'd certainly encourage my students to try blogging more enthusiastically this year! I'd comment myself, but they don't "take it seriously", as they can already interact with me f2f, you know...

These are the blogs:

http://caereaders.blogspot.com (book, movies and music reviews)

http://ethicsforteachers.blogspot.com (EFL teacher trainees about to graduate discuss issues on ethics in teaching)

http://lcbttceducators.blogspot.com/ (EFL teacher trainees who have just entered college discuss how different educators have influenced them in their views)

Thanks in advance!

If you pop in, don't forget to sign and add where you're from, to surprise my students...

Dear baw07 and b4b friends : some days ago Melba (or Nelba) said she was happier than dog with two tails because she had put a clock in her blog. Well, let me tell you that I have not just a dog. I have seven, two of them with GMT time and the others with venezuelan time. The reason? When I was trying to download the clock, it never told me it was ready, so I repeated the operation till I got tired and gave it up. Warm hugs from Venezuela, the land of the sweetest oranges in the world. Horacio.

Hi all!

I'm working on my Motime blog http://funenglish4kids.motime.com/ and I'm trying to embedd a slide show in the messages section, because I don't want it to appear in the right or left columns. But the problem seems that the Post messages section doesn't allow to publish HTML codes. Am I right?

I can get the slide show in HTML code or in a link form. But I don't want a link. I want the slide to appear in the blog. What should I do?

From my past experience with Blogger http://businessenglish4u.blogspot.com/

I can post messages in HTML. In the Post messages section I choose HTML or Compose mode. However, Motime seems to be different... there isn't a HTML post mode, is it?

Can you help me? Thank you veeery much!

02/17/2007

Hi, Susana!

I don't know if I understand you right, but this may be a clue. In Motime, when you are writing a new message, there is a "Fonte" button(Source) on the top left. This will allow you to insert .html code in your post, so you can insert the slide show with the code that is given.

I just tried inserting a code in the Comments area and it works. No link shows. Just a clickable ecard (my experiment). I remembered that a friend form Brazil had once inserted her photo in the Comments area, that's why I decided to try this code.

So... it works both ways! :-)

Olá Teresa!

Yes, I was missing that detail. Thank you so much! I used the Source button to insert the slideshow code. However, I may have done something wrong as instead of pictures in it I keep getting this message: "The Slideshow code seems goofed up. Please embed the code again."

I did it several times and it didn't work. My curiosity made me look up the meaning for "goof up" in the dictionary and it says: to make a sillymistake. Duhhh?!? I guess I'm missing something... and making a silly mistake... :-(Thanks anyway for your help Teresa ;-) I'll keep working on it and I'll try to figure out what's wrong. Byeee ;-)

Good evening to everyone and especially Cris, Hala Maru, and Moira for their very prompt replies, encouraging words and help.

Stubborness has finally paid off!!!. I am starting to navigate around the baw spaceship, flying through cyberspace with all your help and guidance, and have finally found a place to dock and beam my first shuttle adventure!:)

Here it is; my first wiki. http://sarahj.pbwiki.com/

I chose the theme valentines day as it is something that will also be taking place this week and I just wanted a somewhat neutral theme that didn`t involve teaching ESL. I have tried (unsuccessfully) and there does not seem to be a way to change this, to upload a media file as a universal media player file format to my wiki. It has worked but you will realize that you will have to either open the file or save it. Then only those participants that have itunes installed will be able to listen to the file as I cannot change the file format. Whatever you download and pay for with itunes cannot be played with other media players. Perhaps some can be downloaded as they have allowed (Apple/record industry) to allow this but the song I have purchased with itunes cannot be played with MediaPlayer. Burning, syncing ipod, using software for ipod to backup files and delete and edit them also doesn`t work (tried that too..) This is not itunes and Apple`s only problem. ..... Come to that in a later post.....

Anyway, this well-wishing baw spaceship needs to refuel and sends it`s greetings to those that celebrate Valentines and care to have a look at a rather amateurish but acceptable novice attempt!!:) at my Valentines wiki. [:-/] Goodnight to all and look forward to the next galactic baw experiment!!!

Hi, Julia!

I just tried to vote (it's 11:45 GMT) and I don't think the poll is working, because there was only one vote and, though I tried 2-3 times, my vote never showed. When I click on "Submit vote", it doesn't change page and itdoesn't give me any feedback. When I clicked on "Check results", I noticed that my vote wasn't entered.

I only did a poll once (Apr06) in my T-S blog and it worked fine.

http://fwe2.motime.com/post/564104/

Please go there and vote. Can you believe that I never closed voting??!!! It comes in handy now. Please vote and see what happens. You should be immediately taken to the results page. I just tried and my vote was inserted at once. It changed from 27 to 28 votes. This is the kind of feedback I was referring to above and that I don't get in your poll. HTH.

I ahd only one with a dear Egyptian webehad, Randa Effat,in Cairo last year and it was unforgetable We hanve many f2f webheads meetings in different parts of the world documented on Tere's index here:

Some of them with photos and others with photo story. Did you hear about it/I wonder why we haven't shown new bawers some of our photo stories!! I am off to work now, but I hope when I come back I will find some of our historian photostories are posted here!

Hi, Sharon!

Hala has said what there is to say about Webheads meeting f2f. You can take a look at real examples

http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/webheads/wia-index2.htm#Meet

(enjoy!) and then experience it for real, the sooner the better! Many of us will be in Seattle for TESOL 2007.

As to "I am going to miss my many hours on the computer waiting for those 100s of emails and ideas", there's no need for that. We hope you'll stay with us in our warm mini UN - why can't the real one learn form us?! - and continue sharing and exchanging experiences. The pace slows down, thank God!, but "business and pleasure" continue as usual. :-)

Hi, everyone!

It's true that we haven't talked about photo stories and PhotoStory, Hala. It's a great software to create photo presentations or a tutorial (why not?). The software is very easy to use and audio (narration and music) can be embedded.

Link

We have several examples of Webhead meetings in photo stories. Here's one of a Lisbon Webheads dinner where you will meet three of this week's mods and co-mods. In the last picture (from left to right): Cristina, Ramona, Fernanda, Joao (Teresa's husband), Teresa and Luisa.

Hi, Ronaldo! There's one example of Movie Maker from Webhead Michael Coghlan, who presented for us in Week 2. It's called "My story".

http://users.chariot.net.au/~michaelc/els/mystory_sample.wmv

I don't recall differences between MovieMaker and PhotoStory. I'm sure Michael gave us feedback back then (2204), so if he's around and reads this, maybe he will help us. All I can say is that the end products are very similar. You can be sure that when a Webhead travels, we always arrange for f2f meetings well in advance! :-)

We use both Photo Story and Movie maker on our windows machines for students to do digital storytelling. Photo Story is really made for digital images and Movie Maker for movies (camcorders). Of course you can put still images into Movie Maker and get a result very much like Photo Story. Photo Story is much easier to use overall - quick with clean results. Students from 10 -100 enjoy working with it.There are many online tutorials for Photo Story - some are linked Agenda page of my storytelling presentation:

Ronaldo,

I've used Movie Maker and Photo Story. Movie Maker is the complete thing - movement and sound, music, clips to edit so that you can create special effects. Photo Story means you are deliberately restricting yourself to still pictures and spoken comment. It can be very effective.

One of my photo stories - Introducing Nils - which I made for my granddaughter, is at:

http://www.slidestory.com/?page=detail&cid=161

I must confess, I rather like it - some everyday adventures of a blue hippopotamus with my voice!

The Movie Maker film I made with contributions from Carla and her students and it is to be found at:

I enjoyed making this so very much!

MovieMaker and Photostory are very similar. Photostory is slightly easier and quicker to use in my opinion, but is designed to create a presentation from photos. MovieMaker allows you to include movies and still photos in your production. There are other differences, but it's a while since I've played with either tool. A good DST (Digital Storytelling site):

02/12/2007

Sharon,

I am trying to figure out how to take the plunge into RSS. I have two questions about your Protopage, where individual's blogs are listed. First, did the feed for each person's blog come from their blog, where you cut and pasted it? (and if not, how did you get the feed) Second, what do the lines within each person's blog represent? For example, I see under "Marus' first blog":

-Clock

-Week 4 findings

-Communicator Springdoo, etc.

Do these change as Maru adds content to her blog? Maybe just knowing the steps to create your Protopage entries would help me...

Thanks.

Sharon,

Thanks for the link to your explanation of RSS (You have a LOT of additional useful information linked to this page).

To all,

10:00 am - I have set up several feeds now on a Pageflakes page. The first is a feed from BBC that provides me with articles about India. The second is a podcast feed from Discovery (see the iPod!) The third is a feed from Flickr. The fourth is a feed to my gmail account. Have a look - I am curious about how it looks from your end! I chose Pageflakes because it lays out information across the screen in an orderly way, and to me looks a little more formal than Protopage. Have a look - I am curious to know what you see (for example, can you read my email?)

2:00 pm - 4 hours later and I am a little frustrated! I created a Springcast (from Springdoo) for you all to see from the new Pageflakes, but I could not get Pageflakes to accept the feed to my Springdoo communicator. Next I tried to get my own blog

http://jvhslibrarian.blogspot.com...

to feed into my Pageflakes page

http://www.pageflakes.com/sarahbraxton.ashx?page=8690861...

but could not get the RSS code from the blog.and in the meantime I managed to change my template and lost a lot of content! Oh well,

Sarah (USA)

Ps - I have a glorious day off of school due to snow!

Encouraged by Maru's invitation, I tried Evoca.. First I pressed"Mute" on my keyboard (I had been listening to the radio) and then couldn't understand why I wouldn't hear myself... :-P Then something went wrong with my mic and I couldn't record again... I got a message asking me to check my settings...

Well, first year at BAW I tried HandyBits, last year Springdoo and Podomatic, with the WIA Yackpack (?) and Gabmail with a WIA who is also a friend, I think... this BAW has brought about exploration of MyChingo, and this half-attempt at using Evoca, which I'll need to repeat.... This week, I should be trying Odeo for B4B...

What do you think? 5 BAWs more and I will have tried nearly all of them? ;-)

Springdoo adds my picture to the video when I do not have camera which is nice The sound of my message is low and I could not improve it, remember I need a sound card. I hope that when I answered I had treaded the voice message. The following is the link that showed up:

Hi everyone!

I started a thread in Chinswing, inviting people to post their views on film adaptations (in fact, films being adapted from novels). I'm going to ask my students to listen to your posts and comment - their task is to write a review of a film which has been adapted from a book and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of that. I would love to hear your opinion! Thanks!

I'd like to thank Meeshkol (is she takingBaw?), Moira, Dennis Deno, Johanna and Maru for contributing to my Chinswing thread on stereotypes. Hello dear friends!

I finally signed up for Chinswing and managed to post a message there. It's about tongue twisters. I've noticed my students love "mouthing" them in Portuguese, so how about start teaching a few in English? I tried once or twice and they laughed and enjoyed a lot ;-) kept saying and repeting the words ;-) Lovely!I'd like to ask you to visit my Chinswing at

http://www.chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=ccdc4964-5e80-4c7b-a60f-87f78ab6c179

and leave me some tongue twisters you know in English. Not tooo difficult, as they are elementary level. Simple sentences and repetitive sounds would be great to develop their listening and speaking skills!

I apologize for the sound. I guess I was too near the mic...or maybe I'll have to buy a more hi-tech one, like Moira's...eh,eh! I'll leave a tongue twister here to inpire your contributions: How much web would a web browser browse, if a web browser could browse web?Thank you very much in advance!

Hello Everybody!

My God! This is addictive! As soon as I am done reading messages and visiting links posted... I get new emails and I star over. I am learning so much and having so much fun that it is hard to leave the computer. It is great to hear the sound of your voices!

I am not used to record using my voice, I feel shy but I know that if I do not practice I will remain in the same place.

This voice thread is excellent! I am a book lover though I enjoy movies as well. I didn't do well on the Movie's quiz .

I will have to focus on the activities of week 5. I am so tangled up! Today I was at Alado waiting for the conference and got into panic because I was alone in the room! Fortunatelly Hala was using YM and told me... "THURSDAY, the conference is not today, today is Tuesday! We had a good laugh and I enjoyed Hala's laughter!

Please... stop posting activities... I cannot resist them!

I really have to focus on this week activities, I feel a bit behind, too many new places to visit! I am acting like an old rag... I keep getting tangled in every corner! Hi everyone

I know we've moved on from Chinswing and the like but I'm just catching up! I've just started a new thread there which I'd love you or your students to contribute to.

It's at http://tinyurl.com/23hcbr (that's my first ever tinyurl - hope it works!).

The idea is to find out what people from all over the world are doing at one particular time. And that time is Monday 19th February 2007 at 1300 GMT. So of course you need to check what time that is where you are and then after that time go to Chinswing and record what you were doing at exactly that time. If you were sleeping there may not be much to say (unless you were having a good dream!) but if for example you were eating, tell us what you were tucking into. It would be lovely to hear from some of your students too. Great past continuous practice!

02/11/2007

Hi Maru,

I will reply in more detail later, but I just wanted to clarify two points about DimDim.

There are two ways to be invited to a DimDim room. One is by email invitation and the other is by sending the url. I sent the url as these were open sessions where people could drop in and out whenever convenient to them whilst I opened the room. As I didn't know who would come, this was a better way of opening the room.

The second point is that I was not learning to be a moderator. I was troubleshooting the problems and reporting these back to the IT in DimDim, taking screenshots all the time, so that these bugs are removed. I called Sundar in to the room for him to actually see from the participant's view what was happening when you had all those problems. Hope that is clearer now :-)

Hi new webheads-to-be

I think you are already true webheads ,especially after hearing Ronaldo saying something about addiction to baw! !Now you ARE one of us! The first quiz ever I "sat for" in my short cyberspace life was the famous quiz by Albion.com. Since I joined baw 2005, I used to do it every now and then until I got my 100%.

http://www.albion.com/netiquette/netiquiz.html

I thought it is important for you to have a look at it and maybe bookmark it for further "do/re-do", if you have not came across it before.

This is what they write on the home page under this quiz:"Test your network etiquette knowledge with the Netiquette Quiz, our first Java applet. It's nifty and fun. You need a Java-compatible browser like Netscape Navigator 2.0 or higher to run this applet. Sorry, but this applet doesn't run very well on the Macintosh platform."Tell us what was your mark, bravely!!

Hi Baw07ers!

My first contribution for week 5 is a survey about Brazil. Please, take some minutes to answer it!

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=953913295514

Surveymonkey is super user-friendly! You can always refer to the different kinds of questions, it is easy to move/create/delete pages and questions, and you don't need to save your survey while or after designing it (it is automatically done by surveymonkey). It also gives you many options of how to distribute your survey (through links and pop-ups). I loved it and can alreay see many of its uses for the language classroom.

Hi Ronaldo,

Congrats, MonkeySurvey does seem like a very user-friendly tool to use with the students, and I think that they will have fun creating their own surveys! I had a look at your survey on Brazil and I was puzzled by one of the questions, which asked readers about the dates of some Brazilian festivities. The problem is that both Carnival and Mother's Day are celebrated on different days every year, so what would you consider a 'correct' answer in this case? Is it possible to eliminate the 'year'from the question?

Hi Baw07ers!

I'd like to thank the 26 people who took my survey about Brazil. With the free account we cannot export the results, but we can save it as .asp and then send the file (that's what I've done here!)

Here goes the answers:

1. Capital of Brazil - Brasilia (the beautiful city where I live)

2. Language spoken in Brazil - Portuguese (although with a little difference in accent compared to Portuguese from Portugal)

3. Dates:

- Carnival always has a different date in Brazil (it has something to dowith a catholic calendar, but most Brazilians have no idea how it works... it is the same calendar that influences easter time), but this year, Carnival Tuesday (i.e. mardi gras, fat Tuesday) is next Tuesday (Feb. 20) but the celebration always starts on the Saturday before.

- Mother's Day: as in the US, it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May (this year, May 13)

- Valentine's Day: not today... it's on June 12

4. Reasons to visit Brazil - the only impossible one is "see the Eifel Tower" - for this option I think you should visit Moira =)

5. Popular vacation activities in Brazil - Going to the beach is extremely popular, bowling is somewhat popular, swimming in the amazon river is not very popular, and skiing is impossible.

6. The name of our currency is "Real"I hope one day you can all come and visit this beautiful country!

If you wonder why, it is because all directions and the 'How's" are very straightforward and takes no time ;f rom setting up an account, creating template, sending your survey, receiving and viewing the reports. It includes great online analysis tools built in . What is great, or I think one of the many great features of SurveyMonkey, is that it can generate the link to the survey for you to send in an email or insert on a webpage at your click.

With the free version, which you will find quite satisfactory features, but if you buy the complete version ,( about 20$ per month ) , you get more capabilities, like having more than 10 questions and more than 100 responses!

There are other many tools for creating online survey,

like InstantSurvey ( not free) http://www.instantsurvey.com/,

or Zoomerang http://info.zoomerang.com/.

However, let me draw your attention to that ; what is much more important and comes first when creating a survey, is not how to use SurveyMonkey, or any other tool, but how to formulate the survey questions to get an understanding of the responses from those taking the survey. The content comes first then the use of the tool, remember? Let's shoot this too down!

I also created two movies for my students this school year to re-introduce CALL lessons and then to motivate them to create ZT movies. The first is about what CALL lessons are and the second is based on what we had just studied: like, love, hate... + -ing form.

Dear Carla,

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my survey! I know that people in Asia usually use both hands to give and receive gifts to show respect to the gift giver and receiver. For them, it's not polite to open the gifts immediately; they usually wait until later to open the gifts. Is it true that people in the Muslim countries use their right hands to accept the gifts? I'm thinking about using the result of this survey to write a lesson plan, or make an interactive exercise, or maybe a blog entry.

Thanks,

Cora

Hi Cora,

We, Muslims, do not use our left hand at all when eating, drinking or when giving or accepting anything, not only with gifts. On accepting gifts, we use our right hand as usual , but if the gift needs to be taken with both hands, there is no problem in that!! We do not mean to use the right or both hands. What's important is we do not use our left hand at all, or this is what is supposed to be!

Hello Everyone!

How did you spent your Valentine's Day? I hope you had a nice day. I went to CLA Language Center, Interactive Exercise Makers and made a matching exercise called Application Forms, please check it out at the following link and let me know what do you think.

http://elsiesgi.cla.umn.edu/match/application_page.htm

I did not know what to do to see who answers and check them to grade students or a tutorial to follow. There several forms that I did not understand: Gloss Maker, Cloze Maker, EvalMaker and Multy Maker. I choose Match Maker because it was the one I understood.

I also explored Hot Potatoes and saw:

  • that it is not free software

    * that you have to download the application file

The page mentions bugs and I did not feel comfortable with that. I may have bugs, my IE is very slow and my Microsoft Office Word gets stuck every time I open it.

Dear Maru,

your exercise looks great. Thank you for sharing.

About hotpotatoes. It is true that you have to download an application and then upload your exercise to a server for it to be available to the www community. It can be free though, as long as you are using it with an educational purpose. You will register and automatically receive a password from them. Let me also share with you all another software, quite similar to hotpotatoes. It is also free, but, as HotPotatoes, you also have to download it. It is called quizfaber

http://www.lucagalli.net/eng/products.htm and I kinda like it.

Here are some examples I used last year:

http://virtual-waters.tripod.com/workingstudents.htm

Another software I also find interesting is Teachers' pet, which in anapplication you download to your computer and automatically gets associated with you MS Word. It is good to create (online) worksheets.

http://www.teachers-pet.org/ There is also an example on my site.

As far as I know, you're entitled to use Hot Pots for free for educational purposes provided that you work for a non-profit institution (that leaves private teachers and private language schools out) and you make the activities you design available to anyone on the Web (that means, not uploading them to school sites that require a password to log in), for instance.... That's why I've never gone far into my exploration of Hot Pots, I'm afraid... let me know if I'm wrong!

Dear Gladys,

this is the information you get from their site: Do I Need a Licence? Hot Potatoes is free for use by individuals working for state-funded educational institutions which are non-profit making, on the condition that the material you produce using the program is freely available to anyone via the WWW. However, you need to purchase a licence under any of the following conditions:

You are working for a company or corporation, or an educational institution which is not state-funded.

You are in business for yourself.

You charge money for access to the material you make with Hot Potatoes.

You do not make the material freely available through the WWW.

So, my assumption is that if you work for a state school, State university or any other state organizations (like the Armed Forces, etc) and you are willing to make your exercises available on the internet with no restrictions you can use it freely.

I have used it. I signed up and got a License key and had no problems. At the time I was working for the Portuguese Navy and my HotPot creations were meant for my students. I also made them available for the www through my site. Anyone else would like to add something to this? Other perspectives?

Hi Gladys

I must confess I am a great fan of HotPotatoes. Most of the interactive exercises I have created have been done with HotPot. They have a great support yahoo group, which is very active, you learn alot from it. There's a lot of sharing. If you want "advanced" Hotpotatoes, you can customize the source files. It's true that you need a server to upload the files, but , as we saw the other day, you can even send the files to motime server and create alink in your blog.

You can also use free servers, if you don't have access at school. I found a free web server that we can use to host hotpotatoes exercises. I think it can be a solution to publish HotPotatoes exercises on the internet for those who don't have hosting space. You have to create an account here:

http://hosting-a.ipdz.com/default.asp

Go to Web Hosting Plans, choose the free option, fill in the form and then go to Hosting Control Panel. It gives you 100 MB of hosting space, no ads; files are uploaded by FTP,so you'll need an FTP client. I tried it with one of my HotPot exercises and it works quite well; it is reasonably fast. You can see it here:

Happy Potatoes!

Hi everybody!

I decided to make a worksheet today, but I have to confess that I started doing it not knowing exactly what a wroksheet was. I mean, I know what aworksheet is, but I didn't know what result I would get from http://wizard.4teachers.org/, so I decided to write something about about Brazil, just to test the tool.

Here is the result: http://wizard.4teachers.org/builder/worksheet.php3?ID=95290

Reflecting about the pedagogical usefulness of this tool, I thought of one activity. The teacher could write some questions in the content area and then provide some links to sites where students could find the answers. For example, I am teaching a group and their next unit talks about the Grand Canyon. Maybe I could write some quesitons about the Grand Canyon and provide some links with sites where the answers can be found. What do you guys think? What other uses have you found for this kind of worksheet?

I liked your worksheet. I am still experimenting using a poor wiki which I hope to build gradually. last week I put a note to create a sheet like yours, but about our main port in Sudan.

Maybe you can also put it like "In Focus" element, with each link takes them to the targted information, for example; discover the Grand Canyon, facts about GC, sightseeing guide, You can even create e-cards for the place for students to sue after the lesson ends. Each link would take them to the information. Then they go to the questions with very rich vocabulary.

Dear Hala

The interactive examples (samples) are not password protected. They just ask for your name; it's one of Hotpotatoes functionalities, in the end the results of the exercise (your score) are sent by email to the teacher. Unfortunately it's not easy to implement unless you have a cgiin the server, and it doesn't depend on you most of the times So, to see the exercises, just write a name or a single letter and you'll be able to access them.

You don't exactly embed it in your blog, you create a link to your hotpotatoes file.Follow these steps:

1. Create your Hotpot exercise

2. Save it as html

3. In your blog, choose Add file

4. Browse your computer for the html file and upload it

5. You'll see a link to your file

You have to change into "Source" and then paste the code of the hopotatoes html file, but you have to remove the first lines ( startwith )and the 2 last lines()

Hi Hala, Ronaldo and Teresa!

I'm surprised the link doesn't work. I've just checked it and...it is working. I went to my blog and clicked on the link. Everything seemed to be working properly. I wonder what is happening... Here's the exercise URL in case the link in my blog

I have been using QUIA for over 2 years to make activities, quizzes and surveys. My favorite Quia activity is the Challenge Board where two students play against each other while answering questions about the weekly class content. Here is a link to my computer learning activities on Quia. Some of the quizzes may be disabled bc I am currently editing them.

Hi Susan!

We've been using quia at the school I work (Casa Thomas Jefferson -Brasilia, Brazil) for quite a long time now too. The institution has subscribed to a quia account and it has been worth it! I'd say some 80% of the online activities created for our website is designed using quia (exceptthe ones from the folders "grammar help" and "kids"). Ifyou guys would like to see some examples, here goes the link to our e-folder, then you can surf within the folders, and if you just pass your cursor over the links to the activities, you can see on the bottom-left part of your browser the url. Then choose some from quia to check out what we have already produced.

I am going to sign up for a 30-day trial. Will the activities I create during the trial period remain available after that time? Hi Ronaldo,

that's a great idea, I loved the listening activity you created using Quia. Can I make a suggestion? Why not add some explanation when the student answers a question wrong? I think they might like to know why their option is incorrect, and not just have the right answer pointed to them. Perhaps include Roger's statement, pointing out that "Roger said... so the correct alternative is..." or something like that? One thing that often annoys me when I'm doing an exercise is not to be told where and why I was wrong... :) Great job, I would love to see more!

I liked your activities very much, Carla. Congrats! Just a tip: since the audio files you used were not long, it doesn't make much difference, but if one day you decide to use longer recordings, one idea is to record them using Audacity, and then, instead of saving the files, you can "export asmp3" so that the files take up less space from your quia account's server.Or you can record them the way you did and then convert the files into mp3 files (maybe using zamzar.com - haven't used it yet, but somebody suggested it in the group)

Dear Teresa,

Thanks for your encouraging comments! :) I hope it doesn't discourage anybody to know how long it took me to find the way around my first exercise. Even if it was a very simple one, these were the steps I followed:

I registered and decided on the type of activity I wanted to try. Then, I had to find the photos on the Internet, resize some of them, record the sound, upload everything... The templates where you fill in the info for the exercises are very simple to use, however, I had to edit them a couple of times since, for example, I had typed the word on both cards, when I just wanted ss. to match the word to the picture. As you said, I'm sure next time I'll do it much faster and, of course, I'll let you know! :)

Hi Everyone!

It is not a surprise, I am confused... Up to last week I only knew IE as browser, during voice week Vance suggested me to change to Mozilla because it works better with Java, I am also new at Delicious. So I have a tagging problem, when I really need to find something I resort to IE because I am familiar with the use of tags. At IE I have a folder with the new sites presented to me and another with the examples or pages generated by participants. I somehow inserted Delicious to Mozilla and when I want to tag something new I am not sure where to place it and I have found two tags pointing to the same place.

I will have to get familiar with Mozilla and Delicious, spare time to sort out my tags and learn how my own organization works. I am having difficulty coping with all the new information, so in order to continue with the course I will have to leave this issue aside for two weeks or so.

I hope that by Baw08 I will have my tagging system working and ready to receive loads of new information. I agree with you, everyone has his/her own way to sort out and organize information; the way each of us conceptualizes is unique.

I say: ...Access to 2.0 content is based on sound tagging! If the information that we and are students create is to be made accessible to the world through feeds, then how can we ensure that the "aboutness" of information is universal? In essence, are our tags the same?...

Converting .ACT file

02/11/2007

Hello dear friends!

These weeks have been great! What I'm learning is so much that I don´t have the time to try it all ;-( I guess I need a vacation to be able to play more ;-) I wonder if you could help me with a problem I'm having with my mp3 recorder/player. I used it to record some conversations of my students speaking in English and I wanted to upload these in my blog. The problem is that the mp3player recorded the conversations in an extension called .ACT and I can´t open the files in my PC. Windows Media Player doesn't recognise the extension.

I already tried several conversion programmes to convert .ACT to .mp3 but it didn't work :-((( The last ones I remember trying were Switch Converter and also Audacity. In Audacity I went to Project - Import audio. Then I went to Archive - Export as mp3 / Export as WAV. Nothing worked :-((( Grrrrr!

I want to record my students again. This time reading St. Valentine's rhymes ;-) But how can I do it if I can't open the files and upload them in my blog? Please? Anyone? I appreciate your help ;-) Thank you very much.

Hi, Susana!

I have no idea what kind of file ACT is. I clicked the File extensions tab in the High-Tech Dictionary and looked up your extension, but it's not there!!! http://www.computeruser.com/resources/dictionary/index.html

Re: Audacity, what I usually do (and it seems different from what you're doing) is this:

-- File > Open

-- File > Export as .mp3 > Save as...

In Audacity I've never used Project - Import audio or Archive - Export as mp3. Does the file open in Audacity?

Maybe you should look at your .mp3 manual and see if it gives any hint as to "how to" convert those files. In the meantime, my techie son is searching for a software to convert those files, because he Googled ACT and they exist.... This is the result: your mp3 player should have come with a CD-ROM that should have a conversion program.

Let's hope one of these ideas work.

Hi Susana,

My only suggestion here is that perhaps you saved this in itunes!?. Is this perhaps a default format in itunes? I haven`t manged to read any other posts yet so please forgive me if you have already mentioned how you originally recorded the file. If it is a cd that you have then try saving it in itunes (if you have this), opening up your explorer and check to see whether these files are then saved on your pc in this format. You should be able to change the file format there and then be able to play it with RealPlayer.

Hope it helps but i am pretty certain that this ACT format is a default format with itunes!:)

Ol Teresa! Hi Sarah! Welcome to this fantastic journey! First of all, I'd like to thank you both for your prompt reply ;-) Teresa, how cool it is to have a techie son! My guess is that you"contaminated" your family with your computer knowledge ;-) Obrigadato your techie son!

As I said before, I originally recorded my students' conversations with my mp3 player. I don't have iTunes...I tried to follow your suggestions with Audacity, Teresa:

--File > Open

-- File > Export as .mp3 > Save as...

The files do open in Audacity, but I keep getting noise instead of conversations :-((( Maybe I don't know how to work with Audacity? I can't say if my mp3 player came with a CD, as I already have it for a longtime. I'll check it.

Meanwhile, I'm going to try Konverter and see if that answers my problem...Thanks again for your help ;-)

Hi again, Susana!

Do the files you record in class play well, without background noise, in your .mp3? Only hearing noise in Audacity seems strange...When I record in class with my PDA, I get a .wav file and it opens fine in Audacity. And when I convert it to .mp3, the sound is nice.

Hope Konverter works for you!

Hi Susana

You can also try this one:

http://www.geocities.com/sound_converter/

This tool is used for converting files of the type: .rcd or .rec or .act, which were recorded using a MP3 player / voice recorder / USB FlashDevice. It will convert the file to a .wav or .mp3 file. These files can then be played back on your computer as a .wav file or .mp3 file. Works on M.S. Windows only.

Download the zip file Unzip it to a directory where you wish to keep the program. Open the file 'playSnd.exe' begin using it!

Hi Carla,

I agree with you, Wesch's video is probably the most interesting thing I've seen in YouTube in a long time. It was released Jan.31 and it has already been viewed by over 900,000 people in less than two weeks, commented on by almost 3,000 and marked as favourite by over 11,000 users. Very impressive! I sent it to a teacher I worked with last year, who teaches a subject in the master's programme called "Reading in the Hypertext environment" and she liked it so much she's going to use it as an introduction to the course.

I think it's sometimes difficult to have a full understanding of everything that's been going on in the virtual world, and if it's not simple for us, imagine for our parents' generation! There are times when we need to be historically distant in order to appreciate some events, and maybe that's the case when it comes to recent technologies. It's a bit like doing this course: at first you are overwhelmed with so many different new possibilities, then slowly you start experimenting and choosing what you really want. It's a very interesting process, I think.

Dear participants,

As I expressed yesterday during the EVO Skypecast, we would love you all to collaborate with us - coordinators, mods and co-mods - in inserting the linksto all your end products in the "Tools used by participants" wikipage created especially for that purpose.

http://baw07participants.pbwiki.com/your_applications

It's very time-consuming - and time is never on a teacher's side, is it?! - to sift through all the messages (like an archeologist, right Susan in Estonia?) and locate all those wonderful creations. It's much easier for each one of"you", elected "Person of the Year" by Time magazine, to do that. And, after all, that is what the wiki we're using for the first time in BaW07 is for, collaboration!

I've visited the page regularly and it has many links, but I'm sure that many more are missing. The BaW07 team is counting on you all! TIA. :-)

Hello out there,

Recently our head of department said she was going to prepare a 'shopping list' for our ESOL department and needed ideas.

Our classes have a Smartboard and some software like Smartbook, Mindgenius etc. We also have sufficient computers and audio-cd players. Can you make a few suggestions? It need not be only inthe field of IT. Do let me know of any useful tools that you use. ALSO, can I ask anyone to recommend a good videocamera to film class productions, and a bit ofwildlife.. ???? Thanks very much,

Michael Coghlan

#2265

02/13/2007

Harvey - I would add these to your shopping list for starters:

  • image editor (Photoshop; or Paint.Net - free)

    * audio editing (Audacity - free)

    * Instant Messenger with voice (Skype - free; Pronto from Horizon Wimba

    * podcast/RSS feed aggregator (iTunes, Juice - both free)

    * Dreamweaver (but if you have unrestricted access to blogs and wikis maybe D/Weaver not needed))

    * Articulate (expensive), or Pointecast (cheap) for converting ppt for Web presentations

    * CD/DVD burning tools (Nero)

    * maybe mind mapping tools (Inspiration - expensive; or CMap - free)

    * screen capture software - Camtasia (reasonably priced) or Camstudio (free)

Greetings, Harvey, Michael and list.

A question for Michael. I remember trying out Camstudio and finding:

1. I could not get the opening frame to expand to full-screen size.

2. I could only get the program to cover and record a small portion of thescreen, as opposed to the full screen.

Did I just get hold of a dud copy, or mis-use it?

Trouble keeping up with the activities

Sarah (Germany)

#2210

02/12/2007

Dear moderators,

My abysmal participation so far needs to be improved:). I know... I know..... I have just managed to delete my previous post now requiring yet another attempt!! I am significantly behind with this course but eager to catch up, participate, explore and share. There is too much information to plough through as there are hundreds of posts to read and lots of fragmented information. My time is limited due to out of office obligations and commitments.

Where do I go from here? What should I try and accomplish? Should I return to the previous activities first or simply try this week`s activities?

Please advise with straightforward links and guidance. Thanks to everyone for all their active participation. I look forward to reading all these posts and posting my own as soon as I manage to get to grips with all of this information and knowledge!

Dear Sarah,

Your motivation is greatly appreciated. I would say that you should go to week#5. It just started today and Hala and Iwill be your moderators. You can also count on our co-moderators' - Elisabeth,Fernanda and Ramona - help - and on the other webheads to be. This way you can benefit from the interactions and exchange of ideas that flow on our Yahoo! group and also try to complete this week's task, which areavailable at

http://baw07.pbwiki.com/week5.

Afterwards you can go back to the previous weeks and try the tasks. The contents, emails and links will be available after the workshop and so you can go back to those afterwards. We will also be here after the BaW07 workshop to give you a helping hand if you need it.

I wish you a great week and hope to hear from you and your achievements. Let'sexplore the tools together. On thurday there is going to be a synchronous session in ALADO. A must go I must say! Hope to meet you there too!

Hi Sarah,

Welcome to week 5!

I second Cris' suggestion, that you start with this week's activities and the reading aricle and everything will here waiting for you to explore at your own pace.

The discussion of the reading article will be in our forum: http://www.miumu.com/phpbb/baw07.html There will be one synchronous event that will be held at Alado, you probably went over here: http://baw07.pbwiki.com/Chat_sessions#Week5 Please add your name in the YG Database to tell us that you are attending this session.

We will be exploring together a collection of software for creating interactive exercises, online surveys, quizzes, and online sheets. You can choose the most appropriate type of exercise or quiz you could use with your students. It is our custom here to share with the group the best ways of implementing these tools into our classrooms. A collection of useful online resources with examples of how EFL/ESL create interactive exercises, online surveys, quizzes will be provided later. We want you to explore the tools first! Hi Sara!

I am Maru, from Mexico, also a beginer. Please hang on, do to freet. I understand the overload feeling, I guess most of us do, it comes with the territory. At some point or another we have to decide how to handle the course, I mean how much time can we set aside to learn. My suggestion would be to continue where you feel more comfortable.

Try to be at the next live presentation which is Thursday 15 at 19:00 GMT in Alado with Isabel Perez, or to listen to it, hearing other voices learning can charge your batteries . The baw07 page will be online the whole year, we can return and do the activities we could not accomplish; the Webheads Community keeps going also, so we can contact them and ask questions.

If we want to become online teachers this is the right community to belong to, there is always someone who will reach to you.

02/13/2007

Hi everybody I'm Antonio Luciano, 20 (callme just Luciano) and I've been a member for a couple of days. I started learning english in 2000 when I started a three years course, after that I continue studying by myself. Three years ago I started giving english classes to all ages and started my IT graduation too. This year I finish my graduation and I want to start my teacher official graduation...I love teaching it's good to see someone happy for learning and growing in his/her life. I really want to make of this group, because I have some interest in putting the technology and the language teaching together. In general I use some web tools like content managers (xoops, moodle) and real good sites like "bbc learning english home page", groups it's a good one too.

If you please contact me to explain what's going on in this fourth week, it'll be so nice...thanks a lot for your attention.

As they say teaching is innate. Those who are successful the most are those who take it like what you have written here">"I love teaching .It is good to see someone happy for learning and growing in his/her life"> This can tell that you will be a great teacher!

Starting your career with webheads will for sure be a turning point in yourlife. We always make a difference in others' lives! I recommend you just have look on the previous weeks on the wiki, but, adding to Cristina's words, you may go back to message number # 2176 (access from the YG messages) with "Welcome to Week 5!" on the subject line. It will give you good idea of What you are supposed to do and what to expect! Best of luck on all the fields of battles!

Dear Friends:

I am posting this just in case it helps someone, though I do not thing anyone is having this problem.

I understood, I am ashamed to say that late, that the forum and the wiki for baw07 are in different places. The wiki is the one with baw as password, the forum uses a password that each of us created when we registered. If you forget your password, you can click on 'forgot your password?' and the system sends you a new one that you can change later under 'profile' settings.

I also understood that Mozilla and Internet Explorer keep your passwords separatedly; if you clicked on 'remember me' using IE, you need to do the same when using Mozilla. Otherwise you can't login.

I panicked when I could not login, after all the efforts I had made to keep track of the places I register and their corresponding passwords! I really hope none of you gets tangled like me, the sinking feeling is awful.

Dear all:

I also have problems to post in the wiki. The baw password doesn't work for me. In fact, I've been trying since the beginning of the workshop, and I can almost never log in or edit the page. I've also tried with my name and email, but it doesn't work either. When I type baw I receive this message: Sorry! This wiki doesn't use that password.

I just entered once several weeks ago. I was typing my introduction and when I wanted to post it, it simply dissapeared. I didn't mention anything before, because I thought It was me who didn't understand the instructions. Hi, everyone!

I talked to Daf on the cell phone a while ago, after she sent me a cellphonemessage saying she was sick in bed. Well, she has had a virus and a high fever for the last three days, but it seems that things are getting better. She was supposed to travel to Barcelona over the weekend, but... impossible.:-(

I forgot to ask about her diploma, but I'm almost positive she still doesn'thave it, because she told me she hadn't been to Valencia yet, where her university is.

Dafninha, get well very quickly and do enjoy the final week in Spain. :-) Here's a webpage (9 pages long!) about my first f2f meeting with Daf when I travelled to Valencia to be at her dissertation defense (Jun. 2004) as one ofthe three Webheads to give her our support "in loco". Hi Hala

I'm in Thailand and work in a northern Thai university as an English teacher. I used to work in the computer field before I became a teacher so the kind of stuff you are all doing and learning about here in baw 07 fascinates me. I've used things like Moodle and skype before and I have awiki for my own use. I joined baw 07 to learn more and so I wouldn't feel so lonely as nobody else in my university uses these technologies and don't seem in the least bit interested in using them in the future. I really don't know why that is. How about the rest of you. Do you have support for using these technologies in your institutions?

Hi Paul,

Good question! This should make a starter for a new discussing here! In fact, most of us do not find support as the situation is like yours, or maybe worse! I will come back here to add to this discussion after the WorldBridges session!

Glad we impressed an IT teacher! I hear from many friends who have been to Thailand that is is heaven in earth". Is this true?

We hope to see you in WorldBridges http://worldbridges.net/

Hi, Paul!

I've been in your situation for 10 years now. Up to last month only the Math teachers used computers, but mainly for Excel and very rarely connected to the Internet for any task.

Now there's a project going on with about 8 teachers from different departments involved. They're using a Moodle to upload files with exercises their students can do on their own. Some are using PPoint in their classes and one has a blog with his 8th grade students, but I haven't seen it. However, no one is using the Internet on a regular basis, as I've been doing for years. On the other hand, over the years nobody has acknowledged te work my students and I have been doing, especially the work of the students, which I find sadly amazing, but will not comment on... Paul, from previous discussions in the Webheads in Action group I think that this is a worldwide problem. Unfortunately!!!

Hi Paul,

Indeed, as Teresa mentions, this does seem to be a worldwide problem. So, Paul, don't feel like you are the only one in this position. It is a battle many teachers are fighting, but, with role models such as BAWers, hopefully things will improve. And we can offer each other help and support.

Hi, everyone.

Yesterday I read an interesting article in the _Arizona Republic_ (thedaily newspaper in Phoenix) and thought you might find it interesting, too:

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0212blogs0209.html

I thought it was particularly interesting that computer-mediated learning is described as "cutting-edge and even a bit daring" in one part of the article, yet the learning platforms that are mentioned (blogs, podcasts, wikis) are becoming "old hat" to the participants in this workshop.

NB: You might have to complete a short survey in order to access the article. If so, you do NOT have to agree to receive information from the _Republic_ and you do NOT have to leave your e-mail address. Enjoy the article!

Hi, Dennis,

Thanks for the link to the article, it was interesting to learn that we are members of the "cutting-edge, daring" group of teachers! :) It makes me think that perhaps it's time educators redefined and expanded concepts such as the notion of class and the classroom, learning, students' (and teacher's) participation, interaction...

Thank you for sharing this interesting article. Isn't it funny how what they consider "cutting edge" are things that webheads have been talking about and using for a relatively long time. Different paradigms.

Hello,

I have a question concerning storage of large amounts of .doc files. I'm tryingto set up a Yahoo Group where instructors can access a Test Bank but the amount of files will exceed the 20 mb limit. I want to keep it as "seamless"as possible and "Free." Any suggestions on how to go about it?

Innertoob - this allows you to make comments (written) on any mp3 file at particular locations throughout the file. What a nice way to comment on student verbal presentations - or have students comment on others. Best of all - they are getting ready to release a new more advanced product which I believe may allow verbal comments on the fly. Check out my link.

Hello, everyone!

I'd like to share with you a page I have with all the exercises and activities (not many, though) that I've created for my students in the past and that are good for autonomous learning. They're arranged by school year, level, type of exercise and software used.

http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/school/activities.htm

There's software I've used with success that I don't remember having been referred: Spellmaster http://www.spellmaster.com/

Eclipse Crossword http://www.greeneclipsesoftware.com/eclipsecrossword/

Both are free and downloadable, but you need a server to host your exercises.

Eclipse is very easy.http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/school/exs5/house-ec.html

Spellmaster may not be 100% intuitive at first reading (advice: read the"ReadMe" file), but it's very simple once you get the trick. (I'll gladly help.) Young learners love these exercises! And you can embed audio.Take a look.

http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/school/exs6/family-listen/speak1.html">http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/school/exs6/qwords/jigword2.html

Ola, Hala!

I created this tutorial for a presentation. Take a look at the use of arrows (red and yellow) and rectangles (red, I think).

http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/webheads/tutorials/ti-ym-tutorial.ppt

(may take a few seconds to open, because it's .ppt) If this is what you mean, this is how I do it: I make a screenshot and save it in Paint as .bmp (default). Then I add whatever I needed (arrows....) and save it in .jpg, because .bmp files are big in size and .jpg files are much smaller. I always keep the original file. May need it later. I just wish losing weight were as easy as it is converting .bmp to .jpg files in order to reduce file size drastically!!! ;-)

Ibrahim,

You made it look very simple! I think screencasts are fabulous. Of course their use for how to do things with PC programs is obvious, but I'm sure, too, it would be possible to dream up other uses. Since I have failed so far to become a webcaster (I cannot get anything to work) perhaps I could become a screencaster instead. Isn't it thrilling, too, that Ibrahim sent this to us from Kazakstan? (I've spelled it the way it is spelled in Germany).

I´d like to share something I tried with my Basic 1 group this week. I recorded two of my students performing a simple dialogue all of them had practised, posted it in Youtube, got the HTML code and pasted the dialogue into a blog I´ve just created for the group.

The blog is: www.culturab1.blogspot.com

If you want to leave comments, please do.

I haven´t been able to share much but I´ve been trying to follow the weekly activities in the wiki.

This is so fun, Nina!

It is also a great caricaturization how new technologies are difficult to understand by some.Who ever thought that using a book would be difficult? It never crossed my mind, as I grown up among them. Just the same way my grandmother, and even my mother, thinks that computers are very difficult because they never got used to use them. The 21st century generation regards computers just as a regular appliance...just like most of us consider a hair dryer or a toaster to be an essential device to use in our daily routine! This is just super. I have just bookmarked it!

Excellent Nina!

Wouldn't it be perfect to start a presentation on New Technologies for teachers. I'll try it in my next staff meeting and let you know!

Lurking, moodling

Hello everyone!

I've been lurking and plodding through the messages and have played with a few things, noted several for possible future to-dos. I did insert mobatalk (myChingo) into my Moodle website

http://theHsmile.org

and also a few clocks and a map -- does anyone know why Seoul Korea shows TWO times???

I'm still playing with other things -- HandySnap (http://wisepixel.com) on a 30 day trial -- but a little confused with how to use it -- I did make a tutorial of sorts for our moodle site (I'm attaching a document here, not sure if it will upload) but used the handysnap to make screenshots and insert info on to them -- but then couldn't figure out how to do everything I wanted in handysnap -- I simply copied the .bmp files into Word -- not sure if this will make sense to anyone -- but I've found other ideas to follow up on from other message posts (screencasting?)

Anyway -- I tried to send you all a card from my http://www.jacquielawson.com account (_beautiful_ cards) but I haven't seen the message appear?

I've been an on-again/off-again lurker/participator for a few years now on BAW and other EVOs -- just recently completed TESOL's Principles and Practices of Online teaching certificate course. Ditto on the THANK YOU to all the active participants -- WOW! It's a great confidence booster to try new things!

Smiles to all,

Holly in Charlottesville VA

Hi Holly,

Thank you for your harmonized chime! What an active lurker we have here! It would be nice if you tell us more about yourself, your work and your fantastic organized moodle!!!!! It is alos great that you have been experimenting and trying to use all these tools!!

About your attached document, YG does not accept attachments, but you canupload it on the file section on our YG home page. Please do tell us about yourexperiment with HandySnap. Is the file includes a tutorial created by HandySnp? I have been to your moodle and I like all the widgets embedded. I I wanted to add a voice comment, but I am at the office now, no mic, maybe later.

I am not sure why Seoul has two times, unless they mean two different Seoul's!!!!!! Like we have many cities called Cairo; Cairo of Egypt and Cairo in USA ! Anyone?

I have double checked our mail, but no card has been received, sorry. Try again and we will let our email-officer wait at the front door when delivered!!! :-) We will be waiting to hear your voice or participate in the chat at 15:00 GMT, on Worldbridges: http://webheadsinaction.org/ Hope to see you there,

Monica

Hi Holly,

great site, I loved the layout! One of my "new year's resolutions" for 2007 is to learn more about Moodle and perhaps try it with one of my groups. Any tips? :)

Monica, all,

I'm no pro! But I _love_ using Moodles because I can find my way_without_ knowing as much as I wish I did/hope I will someday! I heard of Moodles at two conference presentations, then tried an EVO a few years back to learn more, then joined the Principles and Practices (TESOL) course and plunged ! While I was teaching in Korea, I had over 160 students actively using Moodles (we met f2f two times a week, and online discussions+ requirements for a "third" time each week). It was awesome! I had seven class groups -- one was older learners, many of whom had never used a mouse before -- they learned to _love_ their Moodle and were inspired to use not only their English (beginning level) but also to venture into learning more about using computers -- fun!

Now, I teach in Charlottesville VA -- a pilot distance learning course using Crossroads Cafe curriculum -- not sure how long the grant funding will last -- it's certainly not proven to be cost-effective yet, but for over half of the participants, it's been a true and valuable learning experience. But my Moodle for this course is _not_as active as I wish it would be. Working on it!

Tips? I chose www.moodlerooms.com as a host for my Moodle -- their support is great and for me, that was a must. [we have not yet been able to convince the K-12 server our adult learning center is affiliated with to allow Moodle use -- we're working on that, too. So, for now, our Moodle is on my personally paid for host server -- a professional development expense and one that allows me the freedom to experiment with other Moodles -- but still a bit vexing that the support is not there].

Tips: expect to make time in computer lab for 2 to 3 "explore and learn Moodle" times -- make them fun, not necessarily strongly curriculum-bound -- just to learn to navigate. Take advantage of students who can help other students --

For my experience, it takes a student or two or more to "jump in and have fun posting messages" before others catch on the bandwagon. Maintaining momentum can be challenging. I still have MUCH to learn about Moodles -- but am a self-proclaimed "moodle maniac" :D
